How to read a Vedic birth chart

A Vedic birth chart is a time-and-place-specific map of the sidereal zodiac. The chart does not reduce a person to one sign: it combines the ascendant, planetary positions, twelve houses, rulerships, nakshatras and timing periods.

The ascendant and twelve houses

The ascendant is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon. It sets the chart’s house framework, so an uncertain birth time can change house placements. Houses group topics such as identity, family, learning, home, work, partnership and public responsibility.

Planetary placements

Each planet occupies a sign and house and may rule other houses. Interpretation considers these connections, planetary relationships and the chart as a whole. The Moon’s degree also determines its birth nakshatra and the starting point of the Dasha sequence.

Calculation conventions
