What is a nakshatra?

Nakshatras are 27 equal divisions of the sidereal zodiac, each spanning 13°20′. The Moon’s division at birth is commonly called the birth star. Its exact degree identifies one of four padas and determines the opening ruler and balance of Vimshottari Dasha.

Nakshatra ruler and pada

The rulers repeat in the order Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. Every nakshatra contains four padas of 3°20′. A precise Moon longitude is therefore important when a birth occurs close to a nakshatra or pada boundary.

Connection with Dasha

The distance remaining in the birth nakshatra is applied to its ruler’s full period allocation. This establishes the first balance, followed by the fixed Vimshottari sequence. It is a calculation framework, not proof that a specific event must occur.

Using nakshatra meanings

Traditional meanings can describe motivations, habits and styles of response, but should be interpreted with the Moon sign, house, aspects and complete Kundli. Avoid treating one label, gana, nadi or yoni as a final judgement about personality or compatibility.
