What is a Kundli?

A Kundli, also called a Janma Kundli or Vedic birth chart, is a map of the sidereal zodiac at the time and place of birth. It organizes the ascendant, Sun, Moon and planets into twelve signs and houses so an astrologer can consider temperament, life areas and timing cycles together.

How a Kundli is calculated

The calculation begins with date, exact local time, timezone and latitude/longitude. These determine the ascendant and the local orientation of the twelve houses. Planetary longitudes are converted from the tropical astronomical frame to a sidereal zodiac using an ayanamsha. Because conventions differ, two tools can show small variations even when both are internally consistent.

Signs, houses and planets

Signs describe the style or quality through which a placement operates. Houses organize experience into areas such as identity, resources, communication, home, creativity, work, partnership and career. Planets represent different functions and motivations. Vedic interpretation considers their combined placement, rulership, dignity, aspects and relationships rather than drawing a conclusion from one isolated factor.

The Moon and nakshatra

The Moon’s nakshatra is important for emotional and habitual patterns and provides the starting point for the Vimshottari Dasha sequence. Each nakshatra is divided into four padas. A precise Moon position therefore affects both descriptive interpretation and the balance of the first planetary period.

What a chart can and cannot do

A Kundli offers a traditional symbolic framework for reflection. It cannot guarantee events, diagnose illness or replace qualified professional guidance. Uncertain birth time may change the ascendant and houses, and interpretive schools can reasonably disagree. Use the chart to explore questions and patterns while retaining your own judgement.
