What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is a Vedic astrology timing system that assigns life periods to nine planetary rulers over a symbolic 120-year cycle. The Moon’s nakshatra at birth identifies the first ruler, while the Moon’s progress through that nakshatra determines how much of the opening period remains.

The planetary sequence

The fixed order is Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. Their full periods are 7, 20, 6, 10, 7, 18, 16, 19 and 17 years respectively, totaling 120 years. A person rarely begins at the start of a full period because the Moon is already partway through its birth nakshatra.

How the starting balance works

Each nakshatra spans 13°20′. The untraversed proportion of the Moon’s birth nakshatra is applied to that nakshatra ruler’s full duration. Accurate birth time, timezone and lunar position therefore matter. Different ayanamsha or year-length conventions can produce modest date differences between calculators.

Mahadasha and Antardasha

The broad planetary chapter is the Mahadasha. Each chapter is divided into Antardashas, which add a second planetary influence and narrow the time window. Interpretation considers both rulers in the natal chart, their houses and relationships, and relevant current transits.
